Legal Question in Legal Malpractice in California

My 17 year old son had gotten into trouble for a residential burglary. I hired a very well know attorney, who is also expensive. When we meet he told me, that the most it was going to cost me to hire him, to represent my son in court was $7000.00 ! The probation dept. recommended my son do 6 months, the lawyer said that was to long for him to do. I feel that he never represented my son, the way he should have been. The lawyer never did anything, to get my son a lesser deal or anything! When my son was arrested, he had $3100.00 on him, hisown money to buy a car. The police kept it for evidence. At, my son's sentencing, the lawyer got my son to give his money over to the victim. then the lawyer said he would subtract $3100.00 off his bill, and didn't NOW, I GET HIS BILL AND IT IS $8647.98 ! SO WHAT DO I DO NOW???
