You really cannot, except to ask for proof of the disbursements from the proceeds of your case, and you were entitled to a copy of that. If you have not been given a statement of disbursements (i.e., payouts), request one at once.

File a written complaint with the County Bar, insisting on getting a copy of your file. He is required to give you an accounting. Then contact the defendant or the insurance carrier that paid the settlement to confirm the amount of the settlement.

The settling insurance company should have notified you of the amount of the check sent to your attorney. I'm curious . . . Did you agree to the settlement? If you didn't sign any documents, then perhaps there is no settlement. Feel free to provide me with more details directly.

You should write him a letter asking him about the settlement. If you do not get a response, you should contact the State Bar.
