Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

We had a friend do dry wall work in our garage , he was injured due to his own neglect. He failed to unhook the garage door springs to relieve the tension and began installing a metal bracket and the spring came loose, snapping back and injuring him. We offered to help pay and he said no , he even came back and finished the job and was paid for it. Now three weeks or so have passed and he has decided he wants to sue us. He says its twelve thousand dollars, however his girl friend is a friend of mine and said it was six thousand. His insurance does not cover it because it is considered cosmetic . Can he sue us? Where do we stand? We don't feel responsible for his own negligence .

If this is in small claims court he can make an argument and you can make your own. If he wins you can take it to superior court and try again.
