Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I am legal resident of the US. First day in the country, I crashed a rental car. I had paid for collision coverage with the rental company, but I failed to file a police report. There was a clause in the rental agreement that failure to file a police report will void the collision coverage (which I did not know at the time of the crash). The deductible on the coverage is $1000. I have already paid that, but the rental company wants me to pay the remainder of the damages. Is it correct of them to collect this money from me? Given that the insurance company, in all probability, is paying for the repair after the first $1000. I'm new to the country. How does it work in this particular scenario? Can they successfully sue me?
