Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Something is definately wrong. I was served 3 day pay or quit by new owners on April 19. so I went to my landlord and he said yes he sold the house on March 30. I was never informed of anything by anybody. now I am being sued for $850 for the month of may. I have never met with these people and my old landlord says that the house is no longer his problem, the house just came out of probate. why is this happening and what can I do?

An owner of property with a tenant in it is free to sell the property, subject to the tenant's rights which the new owner must honor as if there had been no sale, but this also means the tenant's obligations pass to the new owner. If the old owner took your April and May rent and didn't deliver it to the new owner, he stole your money, but you still have to pay the new owner any rents owed from when the sale closed forward, and then collect anything paid to the old owner after the sale closed back from him.
