Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

The street I live on has 1 lane going in each direction with a turn lane in the middle. The city is widening the street to make it 2 lanes in each direction plus the turn lane. With the wider street and the added traffic it will bring will lower our property value quite a bit. Is there any way to get compensation for this?

Quite possibly, but you will need to go over the situation in detail with a local attorney who is well versed in "partial taking" eminent domain cases.

If the city is taking property from private owners to widen the street, then the owners will have to receive compensation. I suggest checking in to the matter, however, with the assistance of a competent real estate attorney to be sure that a section of the property has no already been dedicated for public street.

Your claim to compensation will likely depend on whether the City is acquiring part of your property for the project.
