Legal Question in Social Security Law in California

Apply for Disability or Retire?

I just turned 62. 6 months ago I was terminated from a job of 17 years as a graphic artist, a difficult area to find a job at my age. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer several days after my termination, and am receiving radiation treatment. I have had two artificial legs since the age of 23 from a job-related railroad accident. I went to Social Security to apply for Disability about 6 years ago, and the person who interviewed me laughed at me saying to me: ''Well, you ARE working aren't you?'' I'm now trying to determine whether I would be better off getting an attorney who specializes in Disability and fighting for it, or applying for Social Security now that I'm 62. I'm also concerned about health insurance, though I'm getting it through COBRA (at almost $1,500 a month). What should I do?
