I am the beneficiary of a home in California. It was left to me in a trust. The home still has a mortgage. Is the estate responsible for paying off the mortgage before the home is transferred to me?

Not necessarily. That is all governed by the trust documents and interpretation of them if they are unclear.

Unless the trust document says otherwise, the trust does not need to pay off the mortgage before distributing the home to you.
