What happens to my dads pension if he dies after the 10 year certain

Your father should check with the pension administrator, because the terms of pensions vary. Upon your father's death, there may or may not be a provision for a surviving spouse, if he has one. Also many, but certainly not all, pensions provide benefits to the disabled children of a deceased employee (usually children who are disabled as minors). So, the smart thing is simply to check with the pension administrator just to be sure about it.
