Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

My father died in California without a will. His debt is more than his assets. It qualifies as a small estate. What is required regarding his debts and property?

If you (and other heirs if any) claim the assets, you will be responsible for the debts up to the amount that you receive. So probably it is best to just walk away. Then, the debtors can't come after you personally.
