If I have no employees, do I have to have workers comp?

No. However, I have had clients who self insure for workers compensation because they have an option to receive two years of TTD, plus a year of state disability if they are injured at work. It provides a buffer which may be essential if you do not carry insurance that will cover your lost income due to injury at work.
