Legal Question in Insurance Law in Colorado

Can a company refuse to allow an employee to drop an insurance program?

My son-in-law works as a computer operator. He recently started a new job working for a consulting company. This is new for him and he did not realize how expensive the insurance would be. Having a family, he signed up for their group plan only to find out that the cost would be over $600/month.

He now wants to drop this plan and obtain his own insurance from an independent agent. However the HR people from his company say that he cannot drop the plan unless he leaves the company. Is this legal? What can he do to fight this?

Thanks in advance!

If he was required to sign up as part of his job, maybe he has to continue. Some groups only are sold if there are all employees covered, or if there are a minimum number enrolled. Otherwise, no he does not have to buy insurance from the company's group. There must be something more than you put in the question, and you should find out exactly what is involved.
