Legal Question in Employment Law in District of Columbia

My probationary period has recently ended, and I was told that I'm not quite meeting my supervisors expectations. When I asked them what should I improve and how should I improve my job performance, they told me that they don't think it's something I can actually improve, but that my personality doesn't fit to this position. Then, I was told that if I don't want to be terminated I should resign and have this written on paper. I don't want to do it because I won't be eligible for unemployment benefits. What should I do? Can I file a claim for wrongful termination since they didn't follow their own termination procedures?

If this is a private employer and you are not a union member of under an employee contract, you are an employee at will. As a result, you can be fired for any reason that is not otherwise protected by the law.
