Not sure exactly what your asking, but I can tell you that you can and even should be excluded from any meetings, discussions, or phone calls between your son and his attorney. It doesn't matter who paid, your son is the client and the attorney-client privilege will only stay if their conversations are between them. If you are present, then it is not privileged and theoretically a prosecutor could call you and ask what was discussed when you were present.

The lawyer is right. Your son is the client and in order for there to be an attorney-client privilege then you have to be excluded from those conversations. Although the lawyer could give you updates and tell you "what is going on," the lawyer does not have to and your son could tell the lawyer not to tell you. The lawyer is bound to follow your son's wishes.
