Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

my son recently went into publix and open a hair gel bottle and put some on his hand and went into the mens room to try it. When he came out he placed the bottle on the lotto machine to go out to his car to get his wallet which he thought he had on him. While he was returning back to the store to managers approached him and took him in the office and told him he was shop lifting . My son is in his early 20's and try to explain that he was returning to pay for it but they intimidated him into signing a paper he was shop lifiting. He wanted no trouble they took his picture and said he was cooperative and they were not calling the police. That he would receive a letter from Publix. Today in the mail we received a letter from publix demanding $200.00 stating that because of his actions they are entitled to an amount equal to three times the 9.99 for the gel of property value or a minimum of $200. Section 772.11 Florida Statues . It also state that Publix wishes to conclude this civil matter as expeditiously as possible with minimum legal and administrative expense. My concern is my son is in college studying to be a teacher , no police were called but will there be a record of this that will affect him latter. Thank you for you time
