Fl Statute 320.061 is the statute that addresses obscured license plates (it should have been written on your ticket); the part that concerns me more is the search of the vehicle. The violation of the statute is a non-criminal offense and does not give rise to arrest, which means there is no search incident to arrest which triggers. Now if you gave him permission to search the vehicle then all bets are off.

You should get an attorney. It is possible the stop was not valid, but the statute exists.
