Does a legal seperation protect me from being responsible for my spouse's financial debts?

You are not responsible for individual debt incurred by your spouse, whether you are separated or not. If there is debt that is jointly owned then you are responsible for that. If your spouse is using a credit card that you are also responsible for then you may be responsible for debt incurred after the separation.
