Legal Question in Medical Leave in Florida

I have worked full time for 25 years at a large hospital. They told me I cannot take FMLA for my son who is 23 because he does not qualify. He has to be unable to take care of himself 24/7, and mental illnesses do not qualify. He is under the care of a psychiatrist and is suicidal at times, but does not live in a facility at this time
