My friend was served a subpoena and it was less than 9 days notice and over the Christmas holidays. Travel plans had already been made , what if they cannot appear as ordered?

The subpoena is a directive to appear. Contact the attorney who served the subpoena and determine what can be done. 9 days notice maybe sufficient in the eyes of the court depending on what has occurred in the case. If the person fails to appear they can be held in contempt of court.
