nightmare car repair

A friend of mine fixes cars on his freetime. He offered to fix the radatior on my car. While he was fixing the radiator, he had put the carjack under the oilpan on the car. The car came crashing down as the jack went throught the oilpan, causing over $1000 in repairs. Can I take him to small claims court? Is he responsible for the damages?
