Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

i have a son in jan of 2004 he was involved in a minor accident where he rear ended another car. The other car was a chevy surburban and est damage was 1000. the man he hit stated at the time of the accident that he just had a previous accident . I'm a christian with deep faith and went there to see what happened . My son dented his right corner bumper and bent his exhaust pipe around his tire which the owner got a tire iron and pulled it away so he could drive the car. The man stated he was stopped at a light to a spinal institute where he went for treatment after the accident, when the police report states he was traveling which they were ,they just come away from a light he also stated at the time he was fine. My heart tells me this man is full of beans. _today in the mail we received a Notice of telephonic hearing where my son has to go to mediation at the county civil court and is being sued for over 17,0000. he did not have bodily injury coverage at the time. He was told by ins comp it was optional. Now he carries it. My question is that we are not in a position where we can hire an attorney, he is a college student, has no job at this time, and drives an 88 ford which he bought at a buy here pay here and is still paying for it. he has no assests at all. He was 22 when he had the accident. "What can he expect at this mediation ,we have no idea and please what can happen to him " We live modestly its hard and I truley feel that this man is really being dishonest .

He could possibly get a judgment against him and have wages garnished or assets seized. Or nothing could happen. You have not given any clue about the mans injuries except what your heart tells you. If your heart is right nothing will happen. If the Plaintiff is right then your son may have a monetary judgement against him. It sounds like you cant afford NOT to have a lawyer.
