Legal Question in Immigration Law in Florida

I am traveling to Italy to obtain a teaching certification, to English abroad as a Foreign Language. I was told that since I am a U.S. Citizen, I can travel out without a necessary Visa up to 90 days. Once I am out pass 90 days, I need to obtain a visa to stay abroad longer. Throughout the program, the program assists you with obtaining possible employment at schools abroad. They may or may not offer you a contract for employment during the time I am there, but there is no guarantee. One of the program directors suggested, staying a little longer, to continue pursuing an employment contract, if I haven't obtained one by the completion of the program. I know to work abroad the type of visa I need, is a contract employee work visa, correct? Is there any way, that it is possible, to get a certain type of visa, to stay abroad longer than 90 days, and if I get a contract for employment, change the visa type, without having to incur additional expenses, traveling back and forth into the United States? What are my options, prior to gaining employment, to hopefully work on setting myself up in the meantime abroad, while waiting for a contract. Thank you.
