Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

I moved in with a friend in 2013 to an apartment with a 6 month lease through a private landlord. At the time, he didn't have a job but knew no one else in the area so I said I'd pick up first month's rent until he could find work.

Rent was $1000/month with electric/water included so $500 each. I paid the $1000 every month. He had a job for 4/6 months of that lease and started paying me back a little bit at a time. Eventually we moved to a cheaper place and he's always paid his half but through the last couple years I have only received $600/$3000 total he owed for the first place. Every time I mention paying me back from our first place he says he will but never does.

I'm fed up and sick of waiting for all the money he has owed me through the years. I'm in the process of moving out and I want to know if any legal action can be done to get my money back. We kept a notepad file on my computer since 2013 keeping track of the money he's owed and it's slightly over $2000. Am I able to take any action to obtain the past rent owed by a former roommate?

Thank you for your time

On the oral agreement you can file a small claims action. Sounds like you may want to send an attorney letter first though. remember suing and getting judgment don't guarantee getting paid. does he have assets against which you can collect? Seek some legal help.
