Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

My wife and I are renting a room in someone's house. We paid half of the rent and he wanted to hold on to our camera and laptop until we paid him the rest. We made a deal with him that we would pay him and get our stuff back, or leave after 2 weeks and get our stuff back. He told us to email him an agreement since he couldn't find a pen and paper. We then tried to leave when the 2 weeks was up, but he refused to give us our stuff, saying that he only agrees to part of what we put in the email. Is it legal for him to only go by part of the agreement, yet keep our items?

No technically he cannot choose which portion he wants to remember. That said you don't have any proof either that your version is more accurate than his version. I would suggest you try and work it out with the landlord. No court action will end up well for you or for him and will cost much more than the items or rental
