The Hospitals will most likely end up writing this off, though there's no guarantee that they won't ding your credit on the process. I wouldn't cash the check and/or sign any release until you make sure that there isn't any other available insurance, someone else who is responsible, or other avenues to pursue.

The fact that you have health insurance is a plus, if you handle this properly you may be able to get the health insurance company to reduce the amount owed based upon the small recovery. You may also be able to do this same thing with the hospital.

I would definitely have an attorney look further to see if there is any other available coverage before you make your next move.

I would be happy to look into this issue for you and would agree not to take any attorneys fees off of the 10K and allow that to go directly to you and would only take an agreed to fee if we were able to find additional sources of recovery.
