Legal Question in Sexual Harassment in Florida

I, along with other women in our church, have been sexually harassesd by a male member(Lay

leader in our church). Three of us wrote statements and spoke with our Pastor about this back

in September of 2009. We were promised a safe church. In my case, the harasser threatened

my husband when I rejected him.

They sent a certified letter to him informing him of these accusations, but he did not sign for it

or pick it up. Nothing else has been done since. In Dec., my husband was hospitalized for

an emergency bypass and heart valve replacement. As I was alone in the house, we chose not

to tell the church at large, due to fear of retaliation. A week after surgery, I spoke with Pastor

and co=pastor by phone letting them know of my husband's condition and requested that this

not get out to the congregation at large.

The next day, they sent another certified letter to the harasser. I feel they did this to protect

themselves only, in case he would have harmed either of us.

My questions is this: Must I remain on as a member in this church until (and if) this issue is

settled? I am so angry at this church and wish to leave, but not sure where that will leave me

if I pursue legal avenues in the future. How long should I remain a member, if I stay for these

reasons.

Thank you.

You can leave whenever you want to. It is very unlikely, based upon what you wrote, that you have any claim whatsoever against the church.
