Legal Question in Tax Law in Florida

If I am a student and I earn under $25,000 annually, do I still need to pay federal income tax? I understand that I need to file, but wouldn't I just receive it all back? And in general, isn't the forst $25000 of anyone's income tax exempt unless they are subject to alternative minimum tax?
