why would someone file a lost will

if an estate was not probated it could be - or if the will filed was in error - it would have to be a contested adversary matter - it just depends, when did the decedent pass away, are there any assets left - was the probate not handled correctly

How could they file it if it was lost.

Even if a will was lost, while the presumption is that it was withdrawn, it may simply mean the original is lost and the decedent intended to have it be effective anyway.
