Legal Question in Business Law in Georgia

I just started interning with a medium-sized newspaper in GA. I had to move away from home and I absolutely hate the job, and it's unpaid. They made me sign a non-compete agreement saying I wouldn't work for any of their competitors in a 100 mile radius. A newspaper close to my hometown wants me as an intern, and I am seriously considering moving back home and interning there (it's 50 miles away), but I am worried that breaking the contract would cause legal problems. What kind of legal trouble could I be in if I leave the company and work for the newspaper in my hometown?

Next time you will learn to talk to a lawyer before signing legal documents. Potentially, you, and the new paper, can be sued, and you need to disclose the agreement to the new paper (so they don't sue you), which will obviously not hire you when you tell them.

You can ask the paper where you are at now if they will release you in writing. Or you can see a lawyer to see if there are any holes in the document (the fact you are unpaid may be a hole, depending on details we do not have).
