what steps to take to fire an employee that is going to try to cause problems

You will need to post more details for a complete answer. However, assuming the employee is at-will, you may terminate him/her at any point for any or no reason (except for certain discriminatory reasons). If you are terminating for cause, make sure to document the problems with the employee as much as possible in case there are issues after the termination.
