Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Georgia

I was cited for failure to maintain lane in burke county georgia in may of 2012. My car slid into a ditch after a car pulled out in front of me, after spinning a total of three times we hit the car that pulled out in front of me. I went to court on August 1 2012 and plead guilty. How ever the judge fined me 100 dollars for the court fee and when I went to pay the fine a probation officer had my court case stating that the judge also put me on probation along with the 100 dollar fine. I did not hear this bit of information and I have now been paying a 45 dollar fee a month to my probation officer for "OPEN RESTITUTION" however my issue is why was I sentenced to probation for a misdemeanor case. My insurance company cant pay the other woman until she stops seeing the chiropractor. I have applied for 2 federal jobs since the accident because I was assured it was a misdemeanor so it would not hurt my record. When I spoke to the air force recruiter today she said that I may have been wrongfully put on probation which will hinder me from getting a federal security clearance. Should I hire a attorney to handle my case because without a federal security clearance I wont be able to obtain a federal job.

You can hire a lawyer, or keep fumbling around in what appears to be a mess that has been neglected and mishandled since the original charges.
