Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

I wrote a check to a contractor. He took it to a check cashing place to cash. They took the check and then told him they were keeping most of it to pay off a loan he had gotten through them. He said no and to give the check back, but they refused. He Then told them they didn't have permission to cash it. They said it was too late. He called me and asked me to cancel the check so I did. He told them I canceled the check and left without receiving any money or the check. Now they are threatening to sue me for the check amount. He called them after I received the letter and they said his loan was paid off.

What is your question? As you can see, it was a big mistake to get yourself involved in a dispute between two other parties. The loan between them is not your issue, so whether it is paid off or not is between them. It is not clear why this is still an issue for you (as it appears from your post). You have only one issue - paying off the bad check. Go pay them in cash (with a receipt and get the check back), or a cashiers check, and be done with it. Of course, they can sue for a bad check and you might end up paying much more. Again, it is odd that it seems you want to get in the middle of something between two other people. You owed the contractor, you paid, and that should have been the end.
