Legal Question in Criminal Law in Georgia

My son did a stupid thing and he and his friends decided they would climb over a fence to get into a neighborhood pool and go swimming. Unfortunately when trying to climb over the gate, my son stepped on the lock and broke it. When that happened they all left without entering the property, but the broken lock was an electronic card reader with a value over $1000. He has not been charged with anything but the police are involved and threatening felony charges. I think I should go to the HOA and offer to pay for the damages and have my son take responsibility for breaking the lock. However I am concerned that in doing this I may be setting him up to be charged with a crime. What should I do?

See a lawyer immediately since the police are involved. Unless the lawyer you retain says otherwise, paying to replace the lock looks good even if he is prosecuted. I suspect a lawyer can work out the criminal part out. But see the lawyer first.
