Legal Question in Elder Law in Georgia

My mother is 75 years old and has been the primary caregiver for my Alzheimer's disease-stricken 81 year old father. I am their middle child and am the only one geographically near (50 miles away). My mother has refused any discussions about leaving their home.....and has let her own physical and mental health deteriorate dramatically. She is currently in the hospital fighting dehydration, gout and a urinary tract infection. My wife and I arranged to have 24 hour round-the-clock care for my father in his home while my mother is in the hospital. Things need to change....and quickly. I have no legal standing as far as being able to make decisions regarding my parents and their current welfare. I have no Power of Attorney, no Conservatorship...I'm not on any of their checking or savings accounts.....and my mom will be getting out of the hospital in a couple of days. My mother has recovered to the point where she is telling me and other family members that she wants to go home to the same situation. They will die in their home if I (or some professional) doesn't become Conservator over them.

What is involved and how difficult is it to attain Conservatorship over incompetent elderly parents?
