Principal of what?

If you have arrears, then you have arrears. The arrears have to be paid first. For some men that have arrears, the court on a contempt petition will make a new order providing that so much has to be paid for the ordinary support obligation plus extra will have to be paid towards the arrears.

I am wondering why you are concerned with this as you don't pay your child support as you have arrearages. If you can afford to do so, you should pay your child support. Any arrears have to be paid regardless of whether child support is stopped because the child became an adult.

I suggest that you talk with an Illinois family lawyer as the child support order is there.
