Leaving Home

This question is on behalf of a friend.

Shes 15 and doesnt get along with her parents at all. They abuse her and other stuff. Shes tried to leave but the police always bring her back. What age is she aloud to walk out and not be forced back? Shes not a US Citizen but has a green card...?

Re: Leaving Home

In Georgia, 18, I'm afraid. If the abuse is serious enough, she should consider making a visit to the local child services office. However, she needs to think long and hard about doing that, because their solution can often be worse than the problem. If no responsible family member is prepared to step up and take legal custody, she could end up in foster care with complete strangers.

It is also possible for her to petition the court for a family violence act restraining order against the parents if the abuse is serious enough.

I hope for the best for her.
