how can an attorney tell his clients to shut down webpages or accounts with facebook, twitter etc until the case if settled? Is this legal...

Since you haven't told us why he told you this, what you were doing on the pages, or what the case is about (or why you'd want to ignore your lawyer), no one here would have an a way of even guessing what you're asking.

We assume you discussed this with your lawyer, who knows all of the facts, and you know why the recommendation was made. You chose to not tell us. If your lawyer tells you to shut down the sites and there is a valid reason to do so, it is highly unlikely that second guessing on the internet would be appropriate for you.

The other two attorneys are correct. Most people cannot help but discuss their cases or their injuries on social media, even when advised to be quiet about it. However, again, ask your attorney to explain to you why he advised you to do so.
