Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Georgia

I work for a company that I was referred to by a family member. In turn I referred someone who had a marijuana charge that I did not know about. Recently they contacted my family member and gave this persons name and charges determined from a background check. Now the company is stating that bc of the referral, our jobs with the company are in jeopardy....is that legal? This family member is not management or supervision at all by the way.
