Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Idaho

Can a buisness or company refuse to hire a male just because he has long hair?

I have run into this problem on several occasions. But this time I believe if I can make a stand the job would be worth it. I have worked fast food and customer service related jobs for almost ten years now. And I have always had long hair. Now I completely understand about keeping it out of the food, keeping it neat, etc. I have always taken care of my hair.

The policy of this Automotive dealership says " Long hair on men may alienate the customer(s)." Now I can see how they want their salesman and corporate people to appear professional, but the position is a detailer. I would occasionally drive customers home or pick them up and bring them to their cars.

But can a comapany really say that they want to hire you but you have to cut your hair? I am suppose to know about this job on monday so I need to know if I can protest their policy and get the job I want and keep my hair as soon as possible. Tuesday is my estimated date of hire so an answer by monday would be great.

Thank you,

Chris in idaho.

I can't address Idaho law on this subject please seek local counsel on this issue. However, generally an employer may establish reasonable rules of appearance for its employees. The employer is not required to prove that the rule is necessary so long as it is not discriminatory.
