Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

My company received my permission to photograph me on the job. My labor union downloaded this picture from the company's internal web site and made copies. Then posted them at my union hall to make me look bad. How come the company had to get my permission to photograph me but my labor union is allowed to copy them and post them at my union hall in a negative demeanor? Is this legal? Is this intimidation? Is this defamation of character? Thank you for your answer.

Illinois law recognizes a right of publicity. If the company were to use your picture for a "commercial purpose" without your approval, they would be on the hook for a decent chunk of change ($1,000 for every use). This is why they asked for permission.

Your union, on the other hand, did not use your picture for a commercial purpose. If they made you look bad, you may be able to get some compensation, but you'll need to go into more detail. What did the picture show? Why is this problematic?
