Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Illinois

I recently separated from the US Army. Before separating, I was stationed in Germany. While in Germany I bought a brand new car from the US Army post dealership. Since the car was bought overseas it had never been taxed on registered in the states. Once seperated, I got my car back to Illinois about two months later. In order to pick up my car and have time to sort the registration, the government issued me with temporary government registration that was good until somewhere between 6-9 March. In between the time I got the car back, and the date the government registration ended, I went to a car dealership and traded it in. At the time of the trade in, I brought up the fact that the vehicle had purchased in Germany, that the vehicle had never been registered in the US, and I even presented the car salesman with the registration that was issued to me in Germany with the Government plates. Now, several weeks later, I am being harrassed by the car dealership. They claim that I HAVE to pay the tax fee, even after they accepted the deal when all the information was presented to them. I am curious where I should go from here and what my rights are. Any help would be grealty apprecaited! Thank You

I have a feeling they messed up and the IL Depot of Revenue is looking to collect a hefty use tax. Your question can not be answered without looking at all of your papers.
