Legal Question in Technology Law in Illinois

Is it illegal for someone to use a device to track your online activities to access personal information such as bank accounts, credit cards, email etc.. My boyfriend was tracking this information on his personal computer that I was using in his home. Does that make a difference?

Generally yes and yes. Someone has greater rights to what they do on their own computer in their own home, but stealing bank IDs, credit card access info, etc. is generally illegal even in that situation. I suspect there is more to your story you are not telling us, and that if the full story is known, there will be defenses available to prevent your boyfriend from having any liability to you. If you are nevertheless bent on asserting a claim, go to the police and file a complaint, and they will quickly let you know whether they will do anything. If not, as I suspect will be the case, then you would need to sue the boyfriend for any damage resulting from this snooping, and then the boyfriend will just be a boy or guy or man and not a friend.
