Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

I attended an American boarding school overseas. My final year there was 2012-2013. I completed the whole year but since we couldn't afford to pay the tuition anymore because my dad was in Ana accident and is unemployed. they didn't give me a diploma. I got a GED and went to community college. They are now saying if we don't pay that remaining balance they will take legal action. Can they do that even though we didn't get a transcript form them and don't want anything from them?
