Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Illinois

credit card

I owe 2500 on a Credit card and a collections agency called on a unknown name unknown number and said I had to give them banking information over the phone and that the credit company had to have an answer today. I told him I could pay the minimum but dont give any banking information over the phone and asked for different payment types and he said that he would mark it down as a refusal and the company will file a claim with with the state. Is this legal?

Re: credit card

You do not need to give bank information over the phone and you probably should not be dealing with these collections agencies over the phone either. If you want to pay off some portion of the credit card debt, call the credit card company directly and ask them if they are willing to set up a payment plan with you.
