Hello. Theft from a relative in the same house can result in a criminal charge as well as a civil lawsuit. If the amount involved exceeds $300, the thief could be charged with a felony. As to civil penalties, the Office of the Public Guardian in Cook County, for instance, might seek to establish a guardianship for the victim, if the victim is elderly. This is when the Probate Court gets involved. If the victim is the home owner and a guardianship is established, the court appointed guardian could then take steps to have the offender evicted. I hope my comments have been helpful. Would be willing to discuss this further and in more detail.
