Is it legal for an online marketplace (working with Yahoo! market) to change product description text provided by the manufacturer, and still keep the images?

As long as the text accurately describes the product, the online market can indeed write its own words. Retaining the images may be a problem for the online marketplace unless the use of the manufacturer's photos is properly licensed; copyright does cover pictures, too.
