Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

falsely accused by boss

back in january of this year i was accused of drug abuse by my superintendent at a meeting of my superiors, and owners of the company.

this accusation was brought up in a meeting after the owner of the company mentioned his intentions of promoting me into the office.

this was told to me by a project manager who was in that meeting, however has retired since.

i have been with this company for approx 12 yrs, and was told by the V.P i was being promoted.

the following monday, i was called to the office by the owner's of my company.

in the middle of that meeting, i was asked if i use drugs, i was completely shocked by that question, to say the least.when i asked who/where that rediculous accusation came from, i was told that was not important.

until i recieved a call from that P.M who told me i was being promoted that meeting day until my super said that.

i work in construction, and have left that company to join another.what can i do legally to this S.O.B who can tarnish my young future by such absurd rumors?

i want a apology(written) to say the least?

is this defamation of character?

accused by jealousy!!

Re: falsely accused by boss

Defamation involves false statements made in the presence of a third party. Damages are very difficult to prove and it is a very costly process. I would state that unless this is seriously affecting your work currently and for the future, it is probably not worth pursuing.
