Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

Hi. I currently live an apartment in which my ex boyfriend and I signed a 13 month lease. We began having multiple problems and one day he decided to just pack and leave. When he left he paid rent for 2 months and decided he no longer wants to pay rent because I recently got a new boyfriend whom had visited me and my ex boyfriend came in with the key that he never gave back. Once he found out it was a new guy in my life he said he was no longer going to pay and that he shouldn't have to pay cause he doesn't reside here. By law does he have the right to stop paying rent while his name still remains on the signed lease

Unless the landlord is willing to put the lease in only your name, both of you are liable. If you have to pay the whole thing, your option is to sue him for his share. Whether a judge might say you have an obligation to find someone to take over his share, however, is an unknown.
