Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Illinois

Ammend Condo By-Laws to Increase Officer Terms

Question: Our condominium association has been in existence for approximately 18 months. We didn't realize until recently that the officer terms are supposed to be only 1 year. We have had the same officers in place for the entire 18 months, and would prefer that these same officers serve the remaining 6 months to make their terms 2 years. However, we would like to keep the officers' terms to 1 year moving forward. Do we have to change our condo declarations to increase the officer terms to 2 years, since our original group of officers has served from more than 1 year, or is there another option to allow them to serve for 2 years, while continuing with 1 year terms moving forward? Thank you.

I'm not an association law expert, but perhaps you could re-vote them to office retroactively and for the remainder of their term.
