Legal Question in Tax Law in Illinois

taxes

Hello, my mother who is 65 years old lives with me in my condo, she is on social security and disability. She doesn't have to pay taxes because yearly she gets below the taxable amount. Could I claim her as a dependent and get a better return on my taxes? Will this affect her disability and Social security arrangements?

Re: taxes

You can claim your mother as a dependent if you provide more than 50% of her support during the year.

If her earnings through social security and disability provide more than 50% of her own support, then you can not claim her.

If you don't claim her for 2007, she should file a return so she can claim the Economic Recovery amount (even though she doesn't owe any taxes).

Good luck to you.
